What is medically-based therapy?
It is a type of therapy that focuses on the medical struggles of an individual and how it affects their daily functioning. It is different than general therapy as the provider is trained in discussing medical conditions. Depending on the severity of the chronic medical condition, the child may have frequent medical appointments, medication that they need to take, or surgeries/procedures. In addition to regular, everyday stressors, the health concerns can be overwhelming. This can also be especially hard for caregivers who are doing their best to be supportive.
What does this therapy look like?
It depends completely on the individual and what is getting in the way of their success. For many, this can include getting used to a new or continuing regimen (like catheterization or insulin injections), dealing with long-term issues (medication management or medical routines), handling social stressors (peers asking invasive questions), or preparing for big changes (surgeries, procedures, or adulthood). These examples just scratch the surface of what may be difficult for someone with medical concerns.
What other services do you provide?
I am also an inclusive provider for those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and may be seeking services for handling stressors related to medical, social/family, and/or school concerns. I aim to provide a welcoming and safe space for individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community.
